Whether you want a short-term side hustle or a jumping-off point for a long-term career in education, you can check out these 10 best places to find an online tutoring opportunity that’s right for you, and get started earning extra income right now.
1. Outschool
Outschool is an online platform that helps teachers organize, promote, and conduct their classes through live video chat. They offer a wide range of subjects, from regular classes, like English, Math, and Science, to special topics, like life skills and coding.
You do not need to have a teaching certificate to apply, but you should be an expert in the subject you choose to teach. You also need to be:
- At least 18
- Proficient in English
- A resident of either the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the U.K.
Outschool also conducts a background check before hiring you as a tutor. The pay depends on the class, how many students you’ll be accepting at a time, and how long you will be teaching them—all of which are up to you—but average earnings are $50 an hour.
2. VIPKID
VIPKID is a website for teaching English online classes. You can set your own schedule, teach one-on-one, and get paid to do it!
The requirements are simple. You must have:
- A bachelor’s degree
- At least two years of teaching experience
- Work authorization in the US or Canada
Teachers/tutors are paid depending on how many classes they teach and how long each class is. VIPKID’s base pay rate is $7-9 per 25-minute class, depending on experience, qualifications, and other factors. You can teach for up to an hour and earn extra cash through the site’s referral program.
3. Cambly

Tutor.com is a service from The Princeton Review that offers tutoring services for military families higher education, and K-12 students alike. You can tutor for any academic subject, and you can check the website for the different topics/classes available.
To sign-up with Tutor.com, you need to be:
- Living in the US with an eligible Social Security number
- An expert in your subject
- Able to work at least five hours a week.
Tutor.com also requires you to be enrolled as a college sophomore or higher in a bachelor’s program, or have a bachelor’s degree already.
Your pay depends on the subject you tutor and if your tutoring is considered high-quality—your actual hourly income is determined by the site.
8. Chegg
Chegg is an online tutoring company that sets up on-demand or scheduled lessons with students. With flexible hours set by you and the student you will be tutoring, you can work anytime—and from anywhere.
You don’t have to be a US citizen or resident to apply at Chegg. However, you must have a bachelor’s degree—you will be asked to provide a student ID during the application process.
The average pay is $20 per hour. You will be paid each week depending on how many hours you tutored.
